Dear Campus Community,

We want to provide some important updates to transportation on campus and commuting options that you will see when the fall semester begins.

Campus Drive Transition

As construction of the Purple Line ramps up on campus this fall, Campus Drive will transition into a one-way, west-bound only road. This will be a permanent change to the way traffic flows through the center of campus. For those who were here during the construction of the Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center, you will be very familiar with this traffic pattern. We suggest you begin to think about what adjustments you may need to make to your commuting and transportation plans when this change occurs on the first day of classes. The UMD Smart Commute program is a great place to start.

Return of Weekend Shuttle

We are pleased to share that the 104 Shuttle-UM route to College Park Metro will return this fall thanks to a partnership between Maryland Athletics and the Department of Transportation Services (DOTS). The university heard concerns from our community about the challenges that discontinuing the route would pose to our students, faculty and staff. In response, Athletic Director Damon Evans and Executive Director of DOTS David Allen came together to develop a creative solution that will allow DOTS to reinstate the route’s weekend service using new revenue sources, including a new and significant contribution from Athletics. Our campuses’ proximity to D.C. is one our greatest assets, and we hope this change will continue to allow our community to access all that our surrounding region has to offer.

In addition to the reinstatement of the weekend 104, daytime weekend service on Shuttle-UM routes 116, 117, 118, 122 and 133 will also resume in the fall.

Modified Routes

Due to the transition of Campus Drive to a one-way thoroughfare, the 104 and 105 Shuttle-UM routes -- both weekday and weekend -- will be modified. The 104 route will now service the Regents Drive Garage instead of Adele H. Stamp Student Union to reflect the new route. The 105 route will operate along a new routing south of Campus Drive. We appreciate our community’s flexibility during this exciting time for our campus, as we prepare for the arrival of the Purple Line to become more connected to our surrounding region than ever before.

Sincerely,
