The Green Permit

The purpose of the Green Permit is two-fold. First, it will continue our efforts of giving incentive and rewarding those who use environmentally friendly methods to commute to and around campus. Such efforts include better lot choices for members of our carpooling program, free hours of Zipcar use and SmartTrip pre-tax benefits. Second, it serves as yet another reminder that we are all responsible for the state of our environment. This simple step of offering a discounted permit is a part of the larger University’s efforts to encourage environmentally aware and friendly citizens here on campus.

IMPORTANT: NEW QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES
In order to assist the University in its sustainability efforts and to aid it in the LEED certification of all new building construction, the Green Permit qualifying standards have been adjusted so that vehicles must qualify by the EPA's green vehicles standard. These vehicles have been selected by the EPA based not only on highway miles per gallon, but also environmental impact in manufacture and disposal, emissions, etc.

Please note: The Department of Transportation Services did not compile the list below. It is strictly adhering to the the standard of designated vehicles as listed by the LEED certification group. Please see below for a full list of qualifying vehicles compiled from the EPA's Web site.

We understand that this is a change and a much stricter standard than previously advertised and do apologize for any inconvenience caused. Eligible persons will receive a 20 percent discount on the cost of a parking permit.

When can I apply?
Students may apply for the Green Permit beginning August 18, 2008. Faculty and staff members will be eligible for application on November 1, 2008 at the start of the new faculty/staff permit year.

 How to apply:

• If you think you are eligible, bring your car registration to the DOTS Office at Regents Drive Garage after August 18th between the hours of 8:15 a.m. and 4 p.m. to purchase the permit. Please bring your registration and insurance card for verification purposes.
• If you have already purchased a parking permit, bring the current permit to exchange with the new permit. Your account will be credited.  You will be assigned to your usual parking area according to credits/class standing and residence hall location if you are a student. Faculty/staff members will receive their usual lot designation.
•  If you are a faculty/staff member who pays via payroll deduction, the adjustment will be made to your account.
• Your Green Permit must be displayed on a vehicle that meets the standards as designated above or it will be in violation of DOTS regulations and will be issued a citation.
